Waterproofing in Canberra

Wet area waterproofing carried out to Australian Standard AS 3740, for bathrooms, laundries and balconies across Canberra and Queanbeyan.

Waterproofing is the part of a tiling job you never see once it's finished - and it's also the part that matters most. A failed membrane doesn't usually show up straight away; it shows up months or years later as water damage to floors, walls, or the room below. GT ProTiling treats waterproofing as a core part of every wet area job, not an optional add-on, and carries it out to Australian Standard AS 3740.

Where Waterproofing Is Required

What AS 3740 Actually Requires

AS 3740 sets out the minimum waterproofing requirements for domestic wet areas, and the exact requirements depend on your floor and wall construction - a timber-framed bathroom has different requirements to a concrete slab, for example. In general terms it covers things like membrane coverage height up the walls, the shower base, and junctions where different surfaces meet (like the wall-to-floor junction). We assess each wet area individually rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Signs Your Waterproofing Has Failed

Common warning signs include musty smells, visible mould at grout lines or skirting, soft or spongy flooring near the shower, water stains on the ceiling below a bathroom, or bubbling paint on an adjoining wall. If you're seeing any of these, it's worth getting the wet area assessed before it becomes a bigger, more expensive repair.

Waterproofing and Tiling as One Job

We carry out waterproofing and tiling together rather than splitting the work across separate trades. That means the membrane and the finished tile work are properly coordinated, with no gap in accountability if something doesn't line up. See our FAQ page for more on how this fits into a typical bathroom renovation timeline.
